Photographer Bios

The following are the photographers of Fifty-Two Frames listed in the order they uploaded their self portraits during Week #1. Some of us know each other, some are complete strangers, but there is one goal – sharing photography with the masses, one week at a time, for an entire year. Follow the project’s progress at http://facebook.com/fiftytwoframes.

Yosef Adest

Hey, my name is Yosef, I’m 30 and live in Tel Aviv. I shoot with a Pentax (or a Canon point-and-shoot) and I really love being creative with my photos. Aside from photographer, I am also a videographer and video editor, and am looking to travel more, to capture more of the world through the lens’ eye! I’m looking forward to learning a lot from this project, and from all the other photographer’s photos!!

Yosef Silver

Four days in Amsterdam in 2006 ignited the photographer in me. During our short vacation, Yosef Adest and I took 6500 photos between us, unintentionally creating a stop-motion animation of our trip. A few weeks later I upgraded to my Pentax DSLR which has traveled Israel, Australia, England and the US with me. Having recently relocated to Los Angeles, much of my life lies in the boxes behind me in this self portrait. As 2011 unfolds, so will much of my life and these boxes will once again become our family home.

Shara Grifenhagen

My name is Shara and I live in Tel Aviv. I was born and raised in North Carolina and enjoy traveling the world, writing short stories and poetry, eating good food and taking lots of pictures along the way. My love for photography began in high school where I learned to develop black and white photos in an actual dark room with chemicals…I continued with photojournalism courses in university and in Israel as well. When I say “refresher course”…I just mean that I finally turned in my old Canon Rebel (the original!) for a digital SLR and had no idea what to do. I am a Canon girl at heart but at the moment, I shoot with an Olympus E-410 or a little Olympus point and shoot. Looking forward to taking lots of pictures this year!

Channah Graham

I’m Channah/ Channahboo/ Channahbanana or if you struggle with the CH it’s Hannah. I was once a Yorkshire lass, I guess I still am, but after moving to London and then on to Tel Aviv, New York and then back to Tel Aviv again, I wonder how much of the Yorkshire lass is left. I love to photograph life’s little gems and from time to time write about them too.

I’ll be working on my Canon Rebel and also my iPhone (I am a *little* obsessed with Instagram and Hipstamatic… maybe because I never bought photoshop) as I killed my last point and shoot while taking some arty picture as the tide came in. Maybe I will replace it… Let the creative juices flow!

Aharon Hyman

I’m a boxer by trade, I like to fit things into boxes or frames as we prefer to call them in the trade (sounds cooler than just saying im a photographer). I grew up in Manchester but never let that hold me back I have been living in Israel for over nine years and a professional photographer for the last 3 I love anything photography related and am more than happy to assist anybody at any level as long as they teach me something in return :) My main passions are street photography and portraits but I love to shoot anything with people in it or human influence. I shoot people with my Canon and love to mix flash into my work (at least for now).

I look forward to it for better or worse!

Tammy Solomon

G’day all, I’m Tammy, originally from Down Under and marking ten years as a Jerusalemite this year. I’m a Nikon girl and have a slightly unhealthy fascination with the macro world. I love photographing the less usual and banal photos can sometimes drive me nuts. I love photography and have been taking photos for years as a hobby.

I feel like I still have so much to learn and as I have been lazy lately, am looking forward to taking the Fifty-Two Frames challenge and getting back out on the streets with my trusty D80.

Rivka Naiditch-Bauman

Hey guys, I’m Rivka. I’m currently living in Passaic, NJ with my husband. I’m a labor doula, massage therapist, reflexologist and portrait photographer. I work with a Nikon D3100 and D7000. Jo Mandel Cohen

I’m 28 and I live in Modiin, Israel, with my husband Etan and son, Tzur. I was born and grew up in London and have been living in Israel since 2006. My love for photography has grown hand in hand with my love for travel; I was hooked from the first moment, and with every trip, every step outside my door with the camera, I loved it even more. I want to improve my very basic photography skills so that I can capture the beauty I see with my eyes from behind the lens. As a new mother, I don’t have much time to myself. This project will give me the opportunity and the direction to have a little creative time every week, just for me. And of course, to enjoy everyone else’s creative moments..

Kyra Young

I’m 22 years old, and (hopefully) at the end of my BA in English Literature in Bar Ilan University. I was born and raised in New York City, and have always loved photography as an amateur. Some of my other loves include: coffee, sleeping, young adult fantasy novels, acting, candy, and martial arts.

I use a Canon Power Shot SD1100 IS Digital Elph.

Kyra’s Self Portrait

Chaim Schvarcz

I’m a Nikon user and major fan, but i love any camera that can take a photo. I’ve been shooting for about 6 years now but only the last couple professionally. I love to shoot anything that I can make look like a work of art. Though my main work is photojournalism and event photography, I also shoot portraits, macro, still life, landscapes, street, concerts and travel photos. For me its all about getting the small things right that make the picture on the whole look great. I work for a number of Israeli news sites and publication as well as the English language Hamodia and Mishpacha.

Yonatan Weiner

I was born in New York City and raised in Teaneck, NJ and moved to Israel in 2005. I’ve been shooting photos from a young age but only learned what I was doing in university when I took a B&W photography course. Some other thing I enjoy are traveling (I just got back from Thailand, Austrailia, and Hong Kong), cooking and eating good food and drinking good wine and burbon/scotch.

Ayala Young

Hey, I’m Ayala. I was born and raised in NYC and moved to Jerusalem two years ago. I am currently doing my MA in History at Hebrew U and work for an art information website.

I took a photography class back in NY…BUT I was in the “intermediate” class so I know how to develop in a dark room but not how to take photos! I think the reason why I am so drawn to taking pictures is because I like documenting life. (Maybe one of the reasons why I am studying history…)

I am using a simple Canon point and shoot, for now….

Jerusalem, Israel | Ayala’s Self Portrait

Shai Davis

Much of what I’m up to today is because of an introductory photography course I took in my freshman year of college. I had been told I wouldn’t be able to take a studio class unless I applied as soon as I started college, so I figured, why not?  Because of that class, however, I decided majoring in the art department wasn’t as crazy a thought as I had previously imagined. While I ended up focusing on film rather than photography, that first class definitely paved the way.

A whole bunch of years later, I’ve moved to Israel, returned my school-issued SLR, and picked up a pretty entry-level DSLR (the Nikon D40). I’m a Nikon man, now, I guess – if only for the slight investments I’ve made into the lenses.

Melanie Boda

Hello, my name is Melanie and I live in Hertfordshire, England.  I am a Community Artist/Art Therapist and I have been told I take far too many photographs!

My main photography interest is in toilet signs, which I photograph to form part of my ‘Bog Standard Signs’ series, and then exhibit inside the ‘Bog Standard Gallery’ – once a portable toilet cubicle, but now a mini gallery space complete with white walls and an oak floor.

This photograph was taken in the snow, right at the start of 2011. I loved how fresh and white the snow was – it was like being given a clean sheet of paper to draw on at the beginning of the year. I look forward to colouring it in as this project continues…

Natalie Salhov

My name is Natalie Salhov. Two-years prior, I was known as Natalie Shaer. I am from London and live in Tel Aviv with my husband, Effy. Despite my inclination to spicy food, I am Brit at heart; my comforts being a hot pot of tea, wooly slippers and grey weather. I also love to write, cook, watch sappy movies and travel.

I usually use a Nikon D40. In this case, I opted for the iPhone, as I found it tricky to take a decent self-profile, and well, the apps could turn any of my amateur shots into a pretty picture.

Sivan Shtrosberg

Hi! I’m Sivan Shtrosberg, 25 years old. I’ve been in Manchester for the past 12 years but originally from Israel (and also spent a few years in South Africa when I was younger).

I always loved looking at other people’s photography but never did it myself. Throughout my Master’s course in Education I facilitated ‘photo-voice’ projects in mainstream and special schools that gave pupils the opportunity to express their perspectives of school through photographs. It was inspiring to see how the photographs were powerful enough to develop children’s confidence, empower and help them share ideas in a new light.

Aliza Gilman

Hola, I’m Aliza Gillman, 27 years old, married to Neil Gillman and I have two kiddies, Mo (3 yrs old) and Ariella (6 months). I live in Jerusalem and have been living in Israel for almost half my life, but originally hail from Pittsburgh, PA.

My creative outlets tend more towards theater and dance, but due to time constraints and insane sleep deprivation, this project seemed like a nice idea.

I’ll be using a Canon PowerShot SD600 (aka what the nice man at Best Buy told me would be sufficient for family pictures) and while the only experience I have is taking hundreds of shots of my kids in hopes of a few decent ones, photography is a growing interest of mine and I’m looking forward to having some other subject ideas aside from the lil’ monsters living at home with me.

Molly Shadpour

Hello. I’m Molly Shadpour. I am a professional hair stylist, fresh out of NYC with an art background, born and raised in North Carolina. I have called Israel home now for 3 years. Surrounded by the three men in my life (husband, 2 year old son, and beloved dog) who are always on the go, I have had the opportunity to play around with our Sony DSLR camera. I’ve dabbled in the dark room and (old school:) cameras. Looking forward to tapping into my inner photographer as I’m jumping in with two feet…

Yehoshua Sigala

My name is Yehoshua and I’m a wedding and portrait photographer based out of Jerusalem. I’m 22 yrs old and living in Israel for with my wife and baby girl, though I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA.

My interest in photography started when I was little shooting on 110 film (does anyone still remember that?), but I never really took it seriously until a few years ago and have never looked back. I can’t wait to see where this project takes us all! (Hopefully it will fair better than my last years attempt at a 365 project)

Ben Katz

Hello, I go by Ben Katz.

I am a musician and filmmaker. I reside in Efrat with my love, Sarah, and my two boys, Judah Bear and Max Levi. When I made a self portrait in film school it featured my face in Kiss make-up as the phony/sad-clown I decided I was. Here I didn’t want to see my face, considering that when I think of myself I don’t see my face. that’s what YOU see when YOU think of me. My face is merely a representation of a concept of an attempt for my ‘being’ to start expressing who I might be at any given exact moment. so i wanted this photo to capture that process. plus Polaroids are rad.

Menachem Kuchar

My name is Menachem Kuchar. I have lived in Efrat, with my wife Jill who is also in this photograph, for over 25 years. I like this picture because it shows us concurrently from different perspectives. I have been doing quite a lot of work with reflections over the last couple of years. Generally I attempt to keep myself outside the frame. I bought my first SLR, a Canon, in 1976 in Hong Kong and have stuck with Canon ever since, currently a 5D. I am glad for this opportunity to share photographs with like minded Israelis. As well as photography, I do quite a bit of writing.

Toby Curwin

Toby – I haven’t studied photography at all, but started keeping my Canon PowerShot in my bag when I bought it a few years ago, and seem to have become an amateur photographer. There are just so many cool things happening all around me, and I can’t help but try to document them!

I grew up in Chicago, spent a few years in Boston, and have lived as a full-time resident in Israel since the summer of 1996. I’m looking forward to participating in this!

Rachelle Silver

My name is Rachelle, I am in my 60th year. I teach English both online and face to face. Originally from the UK I live in the Judean Hills within Gush Etzion, Israel.
My creative outlet in the past has been quenched by cooking, writing, and blogging, however two years ago I was given a Nikon Coolpix 8.0 digital camera, and I am developing a taste for this new hobby. I enjoy using Picasa editor, to play around with my shots. This is my first attempt at a self portrait which I took laying down!I have joined 52 frames because I want to think outside the box, to develop skills stretch my horizons, have a non grammatical focus hobby, be challenged and more importantly have fun!

Dena Landowne Bailey

Age 38. Grew up in Manhattan. Moved to Efrat 15 years ago. Married with 3 kids.

Always been a visual type. Took a bit of photography (darkroom and all) as a kid. Many years later, found myself drawn back into it, and took a short workshop with a local photographer.  A couple of years after that, got frustrated with my point-and-shoot, and invested in a DSLR (Canon Rebel XT) and a better-than-kit lens (Canon EF-S 17-85mm). I wish I had a longer range, and am trying to plot my next lens acquisition. Either way, I don’t shoot nearly enough, but am hoping this project will change that.

I find that most of my pictures are of landscapes, flowers, still-lifes, etc. Even took a still-life “conceptual self-portrait” for this week, but figured I’d go with traditional for starters. Looking forward to expanding my range!

Efrat, Israel | Dena’s Self Portrait

Elisheva Raichman Golani

I am also a dancer and a dance instructor of ballet, modern, jazz and bollywood dance. My husband and I, currently studying at the University of Houston hope to make aaliyah as soon as we graduate. Im excited for this creative project and to meet other creative photographers!

Avril Gatoff

Hi, I am Avril from Manchester and mother of three adults (one is a professional photographer). I have always loved photographs and photography but since I got a digital camera in 2005 I have become obsessed! I now use a Canon G9 which I love, and maybe one day will invest in a digital SLR (when I have the time to learn to use it properly!). I love shadows and reflections, which was what inspired this self portrait which is of me and my granddaughter, taken in July 2009, I was sitting with her on my knee and saw the reflections on the wall opposite me. There had to be a good photo in that, and this is the result. I am really looking forward to being part of this project and experimenting with my photography.

Shelley Shafran

Los Angeles born and raised with a brief stint in the Pacific Northwest before making Jerusalem home, Shelley demonstrated artistic literacy at an early age.  The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), especially the Pavilion of Japanese Art served as early influences which led to formal training in fine art, art history and graphic design.  While studying graphic design, a passion for photography was fostered and is now the artists medium of choice.  A twenty-something, shoe obsessed, foodie wannabe, Shelley is prone to taking cues from Betsey Johnson and adding hearts to her posts all over the interwebs.

Nancy Shurka

Former New Yorker turned somewhat Israeli after being born to an Israeli father and living here about 5 years. Feels like more time than 5 years since I-kind of-grew up between NYC & TLV.

Former lawyer-actually prosecuting attorney-now officially evolved into a Business and Marketing Communications Consultant, specializing in Social Media.  I look forward to the next 51 frames with all of you.

Martin Sykes-Haas

My name is Martin, I live in Jerusalem and have been taking photos since I was about 10. I started with a Kodak Instamatic 126 with flash cubes and finally went digital last year with a Nikon D90 (after the battery ran out while I was rewinding the last film I had shot). As I learned the basis of exposure, composition etc. on film I still have it in my head that you have to get it right when you press the button and any changes you make afterwards are cheating, but I am mellowing. I’m experimenting much more since going digital and am trying to crack a proper understand how things like colour and light work.

Oh, and I still miss my Polaroid.

Jerusalem, Israel | Martin’s Self Portrait

Anna Cohen

Hi! I’m Anna Cohen, 24, married and living in Jerusalem since 2004 (before which I lived in Yonkers, NY). I work as a graphic designer in both print and multimedia, although my dream is to work in film editing, specializing as a special effects artist. I’ve loved photography since a young age, inspired by the beauty of the great outdoors. I took a course in studio photography in college, but my favorite is traveling around (when I have the time) and capturing aspects of nature that the average person might overlook. I shoot with a Canon 40D when I plan excursions, but I have my little point and shoot on me at all times, because you never know when you might happen upon something picture worthy.

Gwen E. Vere

I’m originally from New Jersey but now a proud resident of Jerusalem (represent!) People call me Charedi but think I’m NOT. I write limericks on demand on almost any topic in just a few minutes. I prefer to listen to performance poetry, but get mad when the best poems have unintentional grammatical errors. I enjoy life’s funnier moments and am happy to capture them with whatever camera I have at my disposal at the time.

I became interested in photography about three years ago and now it’s a passion. I shoot using a Nikon D60, a Sony cybershot and my phone. My favourite subject is my granddaughter Eliana, but I like taking photos of anything that capture my imagination

I divide my time between Manchester, England and Jerusalem and there is so much contrast between the photos I take in each place.

Menachem Katz

My name is Menachem. I live in efrat with my wonderful wife, Ruth and yummy son Evan. I am a drummer and a chef. I have an eye for photography and have always been able to tell if something was just plain shit. I am surrounded by camera snapping gods and continue to be inspired by many of you throughout my parallel existence on the facebook . I consider any display of my shot in the dark (no pun intended) attempts at being artsy, to be a crude novelty. Almost like eating a chili dog to hold you over while waiting to be seated at a four star restaurant.  I am excited for this project and hope to find the time to take some new pictures or even rummage thru old stuff to post something on a weekly basis. I do not have a camera that is in any way shape or form worthy of even being mentioned in my bio. I am a switch hitter, that’s right, either hand. Sometimes I use both together.
